Nigeria: Zamfara killings: Arewa youths protest over insecurity

By Pmnewsnigeria.com

The Coalition of Northern Nigerian Youths Associations, under the umbrella of Arewa Youths Federation, on Monday held a peaceful protest over alleged incessant killings by bandits in Zamfara.

A peaceful rally was held in Gusau the capital of Zamfara.

Mr Adamu Matazu, the President Arewa Youths Federation, said the protest was to highlight the level of insecurity in Zamfara and the entire Northwestern zone, so as to elicit positive action to contain it.

Matazu said: “This breach is now extending from killings to targeted abductions that are intended to be high profile; these crimes are also beginning to spill into neighbouring states.

“In spite of the well-intended steps so far taken by the Federal Government and implemented in part by the nation’s security and military services, the situation remained unabated.

“This has confirmed our earlier fears that the criminality is orchestrated by political elites and traditional rulers in some parts of the country.

“The crux of the matter is that these elites are operating illegal gold mines….knowing fully well that the practices violate local and federal laws.

“They are also aware that their activities which thankfully have been stopped by the federal government are detrimental to the state economically, environmentally, security-wise and socially.

“The Arewa Youths Federation hereby calls for an end to killings in Zamfara and the whole of the North-West Nigeria.

“Our call is imperative because we stand by the people of Zamfara, we stand with people of North West Nigeria.

“We assure that we are not powerless as a people to demand respect for human life in this part of Nigeria and across the country”, he said.

Matazu appealed to law enforcement agencies to step in and clamp down on the gold merchants in the area and step up efforts to track down the supply chain of gold from the area.

He appealed to the federal government not to go back on the ban of illegal gold mining in Zamfara and part of North West.

“Nigerians are strongly behind President Muhammad Buhari and we will continue to provide the necessary support to security agencies”, Matazu said.

The coalition condemns the abduction of District Head of Daura, Alhaji Musa Umar and called on the kidnappers to release him unconditionally.

Nigeria: Berom Youths Condemn Killings In Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina

BY JONATHAN NDA-ISAIAH

Berom Youth Moulders-association (BYM), a socio-cultural group which is also the umbrella of Berom youths has condemned the ongoing killings in Zamfara State and other parts of Nigeria.

According to a statement by its president, Rwas Gabriel Sunday Badung, said the entire Berom youths are saddened and upset with the spate of unwanted and indiscriminate killings of innocent lives and the destruction of property, especially the bloodbath in Zamfara, Kaduna,Benue and Katsina States.

He said these killings are not just inhuman but very unfortunate, at a time when most developing countries like Rwanda that had similar experiences in the past are constantly in touch with the reality and is poised to sustain the peace in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide.

He called on the federal government to rise up to its constitutional responsibility of defending the lives and properties of citizens and this can only be possible if the fight against criminality is objective.

According to him, the government should exert the political will needed to apprehend and prosecute criminal elements whose activities have made peace elusive.

“The association reminds the federal government that the continued killings and heightened criminal activities has the potency to retard our development as investors prefer to invest their resources in countries they are assured of maximum security of lives and properties.

“BYM encourage citizens to be law abiding and to remind our own citizens especially those in the rural areas to be vigilant, considering that the farming season is approaching.

” Ensure that all suspicious activities and movements are reported to security agencies for prompt action please. Also, avoid divisive comments but rather make good and positive use of the social media so as not to escalate tension in the country,” he said.
