MTN Nigeria, partners tackle substance abuse among youths

TOWARDS curbing the rising rate of substance abuse in Nigeria, MTN Nigeria, under the Anti Substance Abuse Programme, ASAP, led a multi sectoral roundtable on the substance abuse ecosystem in Nigeria and the need for intensified collaborative action.

The forum, which held in Lagos, was part of the Lagos state activations of the ASAP aimed at reducing the incidence of substance abuse specifically among youth in Nigeria. Speaking at the forum, the Chairman, MTN Foundation, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, explained that the purpose is to stimulate discourse among thought leaders, policy makers and leaders from different walks of life.

“It’s to bring us much closer towards our goal of freeing our future leaders from the evil attraction of drugs and possible addiction to opioids.”

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, who was also present, opined that education about substance abuse was essential.

“We all can take time to educate ourselves and others about the harmful nature of these substances. Education on the impact that these drug and substances of abuse have on the individual and the society as a whole should be taught and understood.”

To the youths, the State Commissioner for Youth & Social Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri stated: “You are the future of Nigeria; you have a lot to give. When we speak of the next level, you are the next level. ”

The issue of drug abuse is no longer on the roads; it is now within our homes. I thank MTN for this opportunity and I commend them for a job well done,

“ he stated. The State activations, which started with various activities in primary and secondary schools, motor parks, and markets, will continue with an advocacy walk that will culminate in counselling sessions for all interested persons.

It was gathered that a replication of all the activities under the ASAP initiative will be carried out in Imo, Rivers, Kano and Bauchi State as well as in Abuja.

The overall objective is to take the ASAP initiative to the streets of Nigeria and meet the youth in their comfort zones, as part of MTN Nigeria’s CSR objective of improving the quality of life.

Also in attendance was Mr. Dennis Okoro, Director MTN Foundation, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) and a host of others.

MTN Nigeria continues to fulfill its CSR objective of improving the quality of life with various projects such as the What Can We Do Together Campaign, ICT and Business Skills training, upgrading of Sickle Cell and DNA laboratories and consistent support for arts and culture in Nigeria.

How MTN impacts lives of Nigerian youths


In November 2016, Bloomberg reported that Nigeria had reached roughly over 182 million, “with more than half its people under 30 years of age, putting a severe strain on a nation suffering from a slowing economy and declining revenue to provide enough schools and health facilities.” Director General of the National Population Commission, Ghaji Bello, said this estimate was based on the population of 140 million recorded in the last census over a decade ago. The country has boomed from its over 45 million population in 1960, and so have the various problems that have plagued the giant of Africa.

However, the vibrancy of the young Nigerian has appeared to inflate as opposed to Nigeria’s political or economical growth. Amidst the cries for political stability and credible economic and financial infrastructure, the enduring spirit of our youth seeks to fight for survival using various avenues – entrepreneurship, entertainment, tech startups, etc. Areas with youth-focused ‘capital’ have begun thriving in spite of numerous calls for strike action, prolonged strike, increasing rate of unemployment. A report in the has shown that the number of unemployed Nigerians rose by 3.3 million to 20.9 million in the third quarter of 2018, only.

The entrepreneurial spirit in the Nigerian youth has served as a fuel and thankfully, others within the shores have taken notice. MTN Nigeria kick started the maiden edition of its Pulse Invasion series in July 2018 at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly known as the University of Ife) where hundreds of young students were held spell bound for the five-day duration of the event. One of the biggest draws for the event was the Pulse Talk Series that had famed beauty entrepreneur, Bimpe Onakoya, and life and business strategist, Steve Harris. Students gathered in droves to listen to two people who had once been in their shoes and made it ‘out’.

Onakoya built a thriving beauty empire from scratch and pure determination. Harris was a two-time college dropout who now coaches CEOS and tycoons. They were the perfect people to get the attention of the young ones to listen and learn. An extensive Google training followed, that covered using the internet to expand the entrepreneurial footprints of the students.

By October 1st, the second edition of the year had begun in earnest at the University of Calabar, Calabar, Cross River. Excitement coloured the air as impactful entrepreneurial skills was expertly served with the right doses of fun and excitement. Over the course of two months, tertiary institutions in Ogun, Delta and Kwara states received the Pulse Invasion treatment.

One of the most impressive aspects of the series has been the vastness of the fields of those who anchored the motivational sessions – Pulse Talk Series. Tech entrepreneur and co-founder at Jobberman (an online career portal from Nigeria), Opeyemi Awoyemi; Actor, film producer and director, Kunle Afolayan; Beauty entrepreneur and owner of the Tara beauty line of cosmetics, Tara Fela-Durotoye; Nkechi Founder of Aso Ebi Bella (Nigerian online wedding magazine), Nkechi ‘Ink’ Eze; Bisola Dakolo (professional photographer), and many others.

Mtn Foundation Preparing Nigerian youths for the evolving digital world

Digital revolution and disruption is the golden child of the 21st century, in spite of the rise in less than savoury aspects in the world’s political and socio-economic condition, technology is the one thing that has flourished in the 21st-century generation.

This has been acutely felt in the evolution of career expectations and achievements in the past three decades. There has been a generous shift from conventional expectations such as law medicine, engineering to the esoteric and emerging fields, including biotechnology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, which in some cases, were non-existent a few years ago. This has become apparent in societies such as Nigeria where tech startups are springing up at an unprecedented pace.

The Global System for Mobile Association (GSMA), revealed at the Mobile 360 Conferences in Kigali, Rwanda in July 2018, that Nigeria’s startups attracted $114.6 million of the $560 million in technology startup investments that came into Africa in 2017. This put Nigeria as the third highest earner behind South Africa ($167.9 million) and Kenya, ($147 million). These countries contributed a sizeable 76 per cent of tech investments on the continent in 2017.

More data from the Association buttress the point that not only is Nigerian tech scene growing, but it is doing so in tandem with its African peers. Technology hubs on the continent have increased from 89 in 2016 to 133 in 2018, with Nigeria boasting 55 in contrast with South Africa’s 59; Kenya’s 30; Ghana’s 24 and Uganda’s 16.

Growing from the days of the IBM African Education Training Centre at the University of Ibadan in 1963 where computer personnel were trained to operate, program, and service certain IBM machines, now there are well-developed Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) faculties and departments in Nigeria that specialize in the various tech-based fields: software engineering; programming and programming languages; numerical computations and systems analysis. All these subjects have been essential in no small way to expanding the technological horizon of the country’s students.

But the world in itself is digitising at the speed of light and not every Nigerian will have the opportunity to pass through the hallowed halls that house these faculties and departments. Many are compelled to study other disciplines, some have to chase differing passions, others may not be as privileged to walk these halls at all. And yet, ICT skills have become essential to navigating an increasingly complex world. To build a successful business, to understand and maintain a strong hold on a consumer base that now has full control of their rapidly evolving tastes, ICT knowledge is paramount. As a result, these institutions have become inadequate to cater to a growing market that requires the skills they often teach at a less detailed pace. This is why training and courses in various ICT skills have become essential to filling the gap in Nigeria’s tech know-how as they provide the essentials that will cover the basics within a much shorter period.

In an interview with The Guardian in November, the Administrator of Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Dr. Ike Adinde, explained how India was far ahead of Nigeria in identifying the essence of such training in empowering young people with the requisite skills to become experts. “India was able to identify the need to mainstream the talents and skills of their young people positively by consciously building a structure and framework to enable them to acquire these skills and it became an export product for India and the rest of the world and that is what Nigeria has not done.”

“If we’re able to harness the potentials of these young people, especially in the area of ICT it will amaze you how much they will unleash. Many of the African economies are waiting for Nigeria; a lot of our young people can go into sub-Saharan countries in West, East and North Africa by exporting their skills to do things, but that hasn’t happened because there has not been a conscious effort to actually develop these things and tap into them.”

The MTN Foundation has found this lacuna and appears to have built a solid platform to fill this divide. It kicked off the pilot phase of its ICT and Business Skills Training at the International Conference Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State in July 2018, to critical acclaim from various factors. This initiative was supported by the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology and its ecosystem partners – KPMG, Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Oracle and IBM. 500 young people were trained over a period of two days in what was a commendable effort that was heralded as a foray in an area that had become necessary. However, it was a drop, albeit sizeable, on a parched ground. Thus, the announcement by the Foundation that the training would go on a national tour was greeted with nods of assent. In fulfilling its promise of reducing poverty and foster sustainable development in Nigeria, the MTN Foundation organised the second phase of its ICT and Business Skills Training in Kano State in November 2018.

It is apparent that the good fortunes nested in ICT have not been fully harnessed by many Nigerians as many still wallow in penury and poverty – a fact reflected in every national economic indicator – a flat national GDP, low per capita income, rising unemployment and falling living standards. The Internet and in a much wider sense technology has created new job opportunities – social media managers, SEO specialists, and mobile app developers amongst others.

Technology has also created easy access platforms, such as the banking mobile apps and other internet-enabled transfer services that facilitate quicker and seamless financial transactions via; ride-hailing services, such as Taxify and Uber; e-commerce platforms Jumia and Konga, booking marketplaces like and Eventbrite amongst others, through the use of technology.

In this regard, the MTN Foundation’s’ efforts in Oyo and Kano is a well-thought-out plan, not only to gainfully and productively engage the youths vis-à-vis bringing Nigeria’s unemployment numbers down but to enable youths key in into what many are calling the Business of the Future. This will equip them with the requisite knowledge needed to help the nation stamp its feet on the global tech map. With the just concluded ICT and business training for 500 youths in Kano state, at least one thousand young Nigerians have now been trained by facilitators from world leading tech firms such as Google, Oracle, IBM and DBI.

The opening speech by one of the Foundation’s Director, Aishatu Sadauki included a quote from the late United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan that was as apt as it was direct – “Knowledge, education and information are powerful because they increase the quality of human existence.” The MTN Foundation has made a commitment to training young people in more states, with the intention that Nigeria will be able to increase its tech knowledge bank and begin to assume a place of pride among the world’s most innovative nations.

These training programs will not only create countless employment opportunities, but also empower Nigerians to begin to deploy technology to address the country’s substantial social and economic challenges with the ripple effect of such interventions as smart and sustainable management of cities’ infrastructure, grassroot innovations, just-in-time monitoring for security purposes, and an evidence-based policy making for governance.
